Aloha, a Japanese film starring, Ryu Chishuu, was filmed on Maui and it is a story about a immigrant family reflecting on the impact WWII had on their lives. Lots of scenes of Maui as it was in 1983, even the old Kahului Airport which is now totally remodeled...

Hi,
I'll be attending the conference, and my spouse will be in Honolulu with me. I am wondering whether my spouse can attend conference sessions with me despite the fact that they are a non-member and did not register for the conference. The MLA '09 Guests & Children page states that badges are available, but I just wasn't sure whether this included spouses and whether they could attend the sessions for free along with the registered attendees (see http://www.mlanet.org/am/am2009/register/guests.html).
Thanks for any info.

HCC has engaged in the following "green" efforts: The design of the building, including a canvas type sail located on the rooftop, allows for the Hawaiian trade winds to circulate air while venting off heat.
We ask that MLA delegates kindly be mindful of closing meeting room doors to save valuable a/c from escaping.
Automatic dispensers and motion sensitive equipment are installed in our restrooms and operate urinals, hand sinks, soap dispensers, paper towel dispensers, and hand sanitizing stations to reduce waste and save energy.
Recycling of all glass, plastic, aluminum, and paper for all event and administration areas.
All Chemicals purchased by our housekeeping, landscaping, and engineering departments are ecologically friendly.
Any additional perishable, prepared (but not consumed) food is donated to Harbor House. (Harbor house is a distribution organization which provides services for needy families throughout Oahu.)
All disposable service ware including hot cups, napkins, serving dishes and utensils are either made of 100% recycled products, or fully bio-degradable or compostable.
Refit lighting throughout to be more energy efficient.

Actually have to admit Hawaii literature is a bit serious and dark except for children's books and travel books. I tried a search in Amazon http://www.amazon.com/gp/search/ref=sr_adv_b/?search-alias=stripbooks&unfiltered=1&field-keywords=hawaii+humorous&field-author=&field-title=&field-isbn=&field-publisher=&node=17&url=&field-feature_browse-bin=&field-binding_browse-bin=&field-subject=&field-language=&field-dateop=&field-datemod=&field-dateyear=&sort=relevancerank&Adv-Srch-Books-Submit.x=0&Adv-Srch-Books-Submit.y=0. There are some ideas there but I can't say I've read them. Children books are upbeat and cute but not great reading for adults. dianemk

What dress code are you encouraging us to follow in Honolulu at the meeting? Hawaii tends to be casual in its attire--the island way is to be comfortable. Can I leave my business suits at home? Does the convention center get cold?

Business casual or resort attire seems a good fit for us here. This is my first MLA but I asked others and this is the recommendation. Sandals or comfortable shoes are a good choice for footwear. The convention center is air-conditioned and does get cold in particularly in the meeting rooms so you might want to carry a light jacket or sweater .

If you did not get a room at the conference rate and have no other promotional rates (such as AAA), take advantage of Hilton's '50 Years of Aloha' promotion: http://www.hiltonhawaiianvillage.com/aloha/index.cfm.

I've put out a call to the membership to ask for resources. I got one answer right off try this review Legends Seafood Restaurant in Chinatown has a vegetarian spin off next door - both are great (for dim sum at least)!. Here's a review: http://travel.yahoo.com/p-travelguide-21899064R to a Chinese restaurant that was reviewed in Yahoo travel. There are two Legends one vegetarian only and they're regular Chinese restaurant. Most if not all Chinese restaurants have vegetarian dished as to Thai, Indian, Vietnamese restaurants. We'll keep an ear out for word on the street.

Is there an online map that will orient me to the convention center, where the Hilton hotel is, where Ala Moana shopping center, Chinatown, Waikiki, etc.? One site mentioned that XXX was within walking distance of YYYY but then said it was 3.9 miles! That's a little far in my mind for walking distance after a day of convention going or exhibit viewing.

The Bus (which is our public transit ) website has a great feature. Go to http://www.thebus.org/default.asp# In the middle of the page is a Google Maps Transit link where you can enter a start address and a destination address and this mash-up will give you walking, driving or bus instructions. If you want to get the bus schedule put a date and time and it will show you the exact buses you can take and when they will be stopping at the bus stop.

The cost information on the restaurant pages is all messed up. Wetpaint is not saving any of our changes. I don't know if the system does not like the use of multiple dollar signs in the text. We may need another system to document prices here.

Does anyone know what the annual meeting bags will look like? I'm registering for the conference and can opt-out of getting a meeting bag. Truth be told, I already have a lot of bags, and some of my MLA bags I still have, and others I've gotten rid of. I'd love to see what the actual bags for this year are going to be so I know whether it would be a good decision for me to get a bag or just bypass and help the environment a little. Thanks!

Beth, I tried to get one of the bags or a picture of one. HQ couldn't send either, but they did say "Everybody will want one!" Sorry I am getting back to you so late. I think I will suggest that they have extra bags on hand for people who check the "no bag" box on the registration form but change their minds when they see the bags. See you in May! Aloha, Mabel

Hope to see you in Honolulu!
Teresa L. Knott, NPC '09
Call for "Speed UpDating Open Forum" Topics
The 2009 National Program Committee (NPC) hopes to bring attendees at MLA '09 in Hawaii a fresh and timely update on what's hot and/or cool in our libraries. A special session, the "Speed UpDating Open Forum," will be held to get quick flashes of new ideas or useful tips and tricks on emerging topics of interest to MLA members. Join your colleagues at the "Speed UpDating Open Forum" on Tuesday, May 18, at 7:30 a.m. Participants will have 5 minutes to share a late-breaking idea or cool tip. In the spirit of having meeting participants set the agenda, there will be no editorial evaluation in the selection process; instead, the NPC will select the first 12 submissions received. So start thinking about what you would like to have just 5 minutes to tell your colleagues about. Participants should be willing to tell their stories without visuals. The only technology in the room will be a stopwatch to keep everyone on time! To ensure that these ideas are fresh, the NPC will have an open submission period beginning January 25, 2009. Send your topic or idea submissions to the NPC. The NPC will accept ideas until the first 12 have been received. Reminders will be sent via FOCUS. The participants will be named in the April MLA News.
