Review: Local Vietnamese chain restaurant serving fabulous array of cold cut style sandwiches (on a french roll of croissant), summer rolls, and even Vietnamese plate lunches like lemon grass chicken. Their spring roll bun (spring rolls sitting on a bed of rice noodles, some veggie and the typical Vietnamese sauce of sugar, vinegar, fish sauce, chiles) hits the spot, especially on a hot, humid day. Don't forget dessert: tapioca coconut rice pudding with fruits such as purple sweet potato etc.

Very good! The panna cotta for dessert comes highly recommended. Open for lunch and dinner.

They don't only serve steak, but there's also grilled chicken and fish for those who are watching their beef intake.

A little oasis in the midst of bustling downtown Honolulu. Quaint open-air setting with outdoor seating. Can be busy on Friday afternoon/evening. Weekly wine events get filled up so make reservations early if you are interested.

Review: Family style Italian restaurant. You can order small versions too. Restaurant chain, sit down. I've never had anything that I didn't like here. The food is great, service is great. A good place for a large group since portions are large and meant for sharing (family style). They have a lunch menu too for small eaters. Fabulous calamari, bruschetta, wonderful thin crusted cracker thin pizzas refreshing salads like the Apple Gorgonzola Salad and satisfying pastas such as the Penne Basilica and the Gnocchial Telefono. Bring your appetites because portions can be huge!

Review: Offering a selection of light meals such as salads, sandwiches, soups, and a fancy selection of freshly homemade desserts! There are also specials on a daily basis. No reservations. Walk in and sit down. Order at the counter, sit at a table, food is delivered to you when ready, and you pay after you eat. Very non-conventional but that's their odd system. The shrimp salad is wonderful-- light and tangy and delicious! Open in the evenings as well.

Service is quick but the wait is long if you go during peak meal times so arrive early. Recommended favorites are: Fried Macaroni and Cheese appetizer, Boston House Salad, Fish sandwich, Shrimp Scampi, Miso Salmon, Grilled Pork Chops, Chicken Madeira.. Don't forget the cheesecake for dessert, especially the Vanilla Bean!

Check out this Honolulu Advertiser article written in 2002. Lovely sit down atmosphere that makes you feel you got instantly teleported to Thailand.

Review: Best known for it's beach side bar that offers live music on late Sunday afternoons, the American cuisine at Duke's located in the Outrigger Waikiki Hotel (between the Moana Surfrider Hotel and newly renovated Sheraton Moana Hotel) should provide something for everyone. Yet the view and casual setting is what it is known for. Decorated with surfing memorabilia, including photos of famous surfer, Duke Kahanamoku, Duke's also provides a Sunday brunch buffet with some local seafood and salad favorites.

World Fireknife Dance Competition and Samoa Festiva l

On the grounds of the Polynesian Cultural Center.
Attracting competitors from Hawaii, American Samoa, Samoa, the US mainland and other locations in the
Pacific-Rim, this event sees participants compete in dance-offs to be crowned champion in the World
Fireknife Dance Competition. Winners progress to the next round and the final is held on the last day of the
festival. The competition is part of the Samoa Festival, which includes a high school competition of
traditional customs such as speech making, basket weaving, coconut husking and fire-making - as well as
singing and dancing.

Hawaii Music and Book Festival Celebration of Story and Song

Article from the Honolulu Advertiser (April 22, 2009) Featured will be John Saul, Terry Brooks, Stuart Coleman, James Rumford, Kate Elliot, Scott Goto, Chris McKinney and pop-up book kings Robert Sabuda & Matthew Reinhart. There will be concerts as well with Jake Shimabukuro as seen on Late Night with Conan O'Brien as well as a Hawaiian band competition with 6 bands one of which will Cyril Pahinui and Kaukahi. For kids there will be a keiki (children's) area and storytelling.

The Mayor of Honolulu described the event as:

"This unique event will showcase the proud literary and musical traditions of our islands in a way that is
fun, accessible and memorable for people of all ages, backgrounds, and tastes. Hawaii’s publishers strive to
introduce Hawaii’s books and music to the world and to introduce Hawaii to new worlds of books and
music. They honor our host culture, including the oral and written histories of the Hawaiian people, and
highlight lifelong literacy for all of Hawaii’s people."

The 2008 festival featured Michael Ondaatje, Linda Sue Park, and James Rumford.

LANTERN FLOATING CEREMONY IN HAWAII

Ala Moana Beach Park (Magic Island)

Following the Buddhist tradition ofToro-Nagashi ("lantern offerings on the water"), this annual event honors the deceased. Prayers or messages to loved ones who have departed are transposed onto recycled wooden, paper lanterns which are light in the evening and set to sail from the beach of Magic Island. In 2007, an estimated 37,000 people gathered to participate or witness the event which is free to the public. Prayers are completed ahead of time but for conference attendees who plan on staying on Oahu during the Memorial Day weekend, this is a cultural event worth seeing.

Visit the North Shore.
The north shore has high surf in the winter, flat surf in the summer, and moderate to no surf in spring and fall. A drive or bus ride to the North Shore is a pleasant way to spend the day. .Endangered Hawaiian Monk Seals can occasionally be found sunning on the beaches (Please be respectful when viewing these endangered wild animals). Waimea Bay has beautiful white sand beach and crystal clear water. Three Tables and Shark's Cove beaches are great for snorkeling when the surf is low.

Historic Haleiwa Town.
Meander around historic Haleiwa town where you can shop and eat for local treats in a country setting where everything is casual.
As you enter Haleiwa town, be sure to look to the right (just before McDonald's) for the renowned Giovanni's Original White Shrimp Truck. If you want to take a plate of food and sit on the beach this is a great place for delicious garlic shrimp. But don't go too late in the afternoon - they usually run out of shrimp.

In the North Shore Market Place: The Coffee Gallery has freshly roasted coffee in a wide assortment of flavors and roasts. They also have a tranquil little seating area where you can enjoy a great cup of coffee and a pastry in a rustic setting. Breakers has a wonderful menu including home made soups, salads with fresh locally-grown produce, fresh fish, sandwiches and much more. Oceans in Glass has hand-blown glass sculptures and if you're lucky you might get to see an artist at work.

Jameson's by the Sea (just on the other side of the historic Haleiwa bridge) is a great place to enjoy the sunset and have a drink (I don't recommend the food though - but I haven't been there for a long time). I DO recommend the fudge that they sell in the gift shop!!
Pizza Bob's has great gourmet pizzas and ice cold beer, including an assortment of local brews.

Nuuanu Pali Lookout. A "must-see" - spectacular view of the Windward side of the island from the Koolau mountains. Be prepared for strong winds.
Downtown Honolulu: Architecture fans might want to explore this link for a walking tour of the capitol district.
The Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie is a popular tourist stop on an around the island drive or bus ride. Run by the Morman church, the center showcases life in Polynesia.

Diamond Head. See Waikiki from the vantage point of the top of Diamond Head. A moderately challenging hike of 175 stairs. There is free parking, restrooms, and snacks available. The hike is hot and dry so take water & wear sunblock.

Dole Plantation. On the way to the North Shore, this tourist stop is located in what was once a large pineapple plantation. Today, the area is into diversified agriculture including coffee. The Dole Plantation features a train tour, gardens, and a 3.11 mile maze.

Ala Moana Beach Park
Ala Moana Beach Park is located across the street from Ala Moana Shopping Center. For those wanting to get their feet wet, county lifeguards are usually on duty. For those who don't, the park is great for picnics and has a jogging/walking path.

North Shore

Review: Okonomiyaki is a Japanese pancake that they put all kinds of things in. Put a sauce on and serve hot. The things to put in are chosen by you - things like chicken, steak, calamari, veggies, bean sprouts, etc. It's cooked Benihana-style right in front of you so you get to eat it hot. You can also get fried noodles and daily specials for lunch. It's fairly reasonable for lunch and you can ask for a regular table if you don't want all that steam in your face.

Review: Hawaiian foods for the locals. This is what we've come to understand as "Hawaiian" food. Poi, lau lau, kalua pig (roasted pork), poke(raw fish). Everything is tasty and everything is probably like nothing you've eaten before. If you're adventurous (culinary wise). Poi comes fresh or day old. Locals usually order day old poi because it has more flavor. If you want to play it safe order the rice, kalua pig, beef stew. See the Hawaiian page for more descriptions of the dishes. Review: If dining for lunch lunch, there is both table as well as dim sum service where carts containing small dishes or "little tokens" are pushed to your table . If ordering from the dim sum cart, you simply tell the server what you want and how much. Your check is marked as you order until you are completely full and can't order anymore! Dinner is also served but dim sum is not offered during those hours so be sure to stop by at lunch time! I personally love the char sui bou (steamed buns filled with chinese BBQ pork), seafood wrapped in tofu skin, pot stickers, roast duck, mochi rice, egg custard tarts.

Review: Japanese bentos (boxed meals) are available here as well as a large variety of Japanese snacks, sweets, and a buffet in you wish to dine in. It gets crowded and the buffet is expensive. Grab a bento, which is a better value, or a snack and eat it in the mall somewhere as there are lots of benches and open seating areas around the mall. The juice bar in Shirokiya on the mauka (mountain) side in the food area is healthy and delicious! If you love avocado, try the avocado smoothie (not so healthy since it contains condensed milk) or my favorite, the papaya smoothie which is made of fresh papaya, citrus and non-fat yogurt! hmm... I want one NOW!

Review: They are known for their delicious, comforting spicy tofu soup (soondooboo) and charcoal yakiniku. The tofu soup comes in a hot stone bowl as an individual serving but you can share if you like. The meals come with traditional side dishes called banchan which are small plates of mixed assorted vegetables such as kim chee or fish cake, etc. The yakiniku, though smokey, is tasty and filling! Service is fast and menus come with English translations which very convenient.

It's cheap eats and great for when you're in a hurry.

Review: Savory comfort food for Hawaii local equals a hot steaming bowl of ramen! If you love seaweed, try the wakame tan tan ramen! They are generous with the wakame and the tan tan broth just can't be beat... (tan tan is the base of the broth and is a tedious rendering down of pork and chicken) Also, excellent gyoza. Seating is limited since the restaurant is small. Go early or late for convenient seating and no lines.

Review: The quintessential American food-- hot dogs! Well, what about a designer hot dog = haute dog?! Hank's menu is mainly hot dogs with a foodie twist. The Hawaiian Dog, available only at the International Marketplace location, is a hot dog dressed with pineapple relish, fruit mustard and grilled Maui sweet onions. He also offers the classic Chicago Dog but done right with neon green relish on poppy seed bun! Rabbit/veal, buffalo, alligator dogs are also available for the more adventurous. Read about owner Henry Andaniya. Perfect for eating on the run or for something tasty and different that you can get for around 10 dollars. Homemade french fries and onion rings also can't be beat with a array of dipping sauces at an extra small cost.

Review: One of the prettiest Chinese restaurants. The roast duck is to die for. I haven't eaten anything there that didn't taste good. Seems like every time I order a noodle dish from there, I am in love with it. Very tasty noodles!

Review: The Halekulani Hotel is a premier hotel right in Waikiki. The House with a Key is their sunset bar/entertainment venue. The hotel is 100 years old and is beautiful and expensive. The view from the House is gorgeous - you can see Diamond Head. This is one of the great but expensive things to do. The entertainment is a small Hawaiian group (yes, they take requests and will do Beyond the Reef) and a beautiful hula dancer. If you're lucky you'll see Kanoe Miller (former Miss Hawaii). Both dancers are very good (maybe I'm jaded cause they're from the same hula school I went to). Food's good as it should be at a Forbestraveler.com "Best Hotels 2007". Rachael Ray recommends the Seafood Spring Rolls as an appetizer which is available off the dinner menu.

Personally, I think lunch is good and happy hour is the da best because of $3.75 martinis and free pupus, but skip dinner - very overpriced and not that good.

Seating is outdoor but shaded. If you are in hurry for something better than your usual fast food fare but want something relatively quick and affordable, KK is good option. Review: At the edge of Waikiki on Kuhio Avenue and along the bus routes is one of Hawaii's original Thai food restaurants, having been in several locations with various other restaurants by the same owner (Mekong I, Mekong II). He also owns Keoni's on Kuhio Avenue at Kaiulani Avenue where you can choose between Thai dishes and American dishes. Both also serve breakfast. The early bird dinner at Keo's means 15% off your check if orders are placed before 6:30 (check for changes). All your favorite Thai dishes (curries, spring rolls, Thai salads, satays and noodles) can be found at both locations. Alcoholic beverages served along with special desserts.

Review: There's a counter "restaurant" attached but can't say to the food. The bakery has been in business for 50 years. Known for its Coco Puffs - chou pastry with chocolate cream filling. Buy one or a dozen. Keep in mind they have to be refrigerated - if they last long enough to make it to that appliance. Also really good An-pan (Japanese pastry filled with "an" or paste made from red beans. Good selection of pies and cakes as well. My brother's favorite cake is the Chantilly which is sort of like a German chocolate cake with a light, buttery sugar frosting all over it. Blue Skin of the Sea, by Graham Salisbury
Takes place on Hawaii between 1953 and 1966, strings together a collection of short stories to form a rare and exquisite narrative necklace. At its center sits Sonny Mendoza, descendant of Portuguese fishermen living in the tiny village of Kailua-Kona. As the book begins, he lives with his aunt, uncle and cousin Keo, since his widowed father is too busy to look after a young son. The unifying thread running through Sonny's youth is his inexplicable fear of the sea, which is finally resolved when he confronts a buried memory of near-drowning.

East Wind, Rain, by Caroline Paul
In the wake of Pearl Harbor, an isolated Hawaiian community realizes new fears and questions old loyalties in this novel based on actual events. A lone Japanese fighter plane plummets into the secluded island of Niihau, owned by white American Alymer Robinson, on December 7, 1941. Since the villagers don't have radios and haven't heard of the bombing (or even the war), they don't know what to make of the Japanese pilot. The village elder decides they should simply wait for Robinson, the island's owner, to arrive. When he doesn't show, Robinson's beekeeper, Yoshio Harada, and Harada's wife, Irene, both Japanese-Americans, are the only islanders who can understand the pilot's account of the Pearl Harbor attack.As the young couple wrestles with a sense of U.S. patriotism that has been wounded by past encounters with prejudice, suspicions overwhelm a once peaceful community.

Eddie Would Go, by Stuart Coleman
Eddie Aikau was the most famous and respected Hawaiian surfer since the legendary Duke Kahanamoku brought surfing to national attention in the 1920s. Coleman's thoughtful and detailed biography is the best look at Aikau's story since the surfer died in 1978 paddling for help after the historic Canoe Hokulea (a twin-hulled boat modeled after the ancient Polynesian vessels that brought the first settlers to the islands of Hawaii) was capsized in a huge storm. Coleman brings his skills as an essayist and poet to weave the many strands of Aikau's life into a coherent picture of how Aikau's story "was also the story of modern Hawai'i." Coleman shows how Aikau's life between 1967 and 1977 was "a strange mix of calm and chaos," with Aikau working as a Waimea Bay lifeguard between local and international surf competitions, culminating in his winning the prestigious Duke Kahanamoku Classic in 1977. But Coleman also smartly observes how Aikau's desire to join the crew of the voyaging Hokulea-which was attempting to show that ancient Polynesian sailors had purposely sailed to the islands-was itself an example of the resurgent interest by Hawaiians to explore and reclaim their cultural identity and further added to Aikau's ongoing status as a Hawaiian hero.

Hawaii, by James Michener
Starts at the very beginning with the creation of the islands (geologically speaking) to the arrival of humans and later Western civilization. My favorite part of the book is the first chapter with the description of land rising out of the ocean and the "arrival" of the flora and fauna. Hawaii One Summer, by Maxine Hong Kingston
This is an interesting collection of personal essays that Kingston wrote one summer when she was teaching at the University of Hawaii at Manoa.

Molokai, by Alan Brennert
This moving historical novel tells the story of a woman exiled to Kalaupapa (a peninsula on Molokai where Hansen's patients were exiled before there was a cure) after she is diagnosed with Hansen's Disease (leperosy) in the 1890s. I have recommended this novel to all my friends and family to read prior to their visit to Hawaii, and all have loved it. But one word of advice - don't save it for the plane -it is a tear-jerker! You must read this novel if you plan to visit Kalaupapa on your trip out here. It really will deepen your experience.

Money Dragon, by Pam Chun
The Money Dragon brings to life the saga of L. Ah Leong, the Money Dragon, one of the legends of Hawai`i and the founder of Honolulu’s Chinatown. At the turn of the twentieth century, Ah Leong rules over his Hawai`ian home, a legendary man so proficient in the martial arts he has brought himself back to life; a man who beguiles many wives, sires dozens of children and is driven by money and greed. He builds a financial empire, establishing himself as a leader both on the exotic islands and in his Chinese homeland. But when Phoenix, the wife of his first son Tat-Tung, arrives in Hawai`i, she becomes witness to how the values Ah Leong holds dear begin to tear him and his family apart. The Money Dragon is a fascinating and important first novel, a tale of a family struggling between love, greed, jealousy and loyalty. Pam Chun reaches into her family history to deliver a story that shows the tumult and opportunity that occurs when the deep-rooted traditions of the Chinese people meet the sweeping advance of the Western world.

Name Me Nobody, by Lois-Ann Yamanaka
Yamanaka is one of Hawaii's premier novelists. All of her books are good, but this one is my favorite. It's a young adult novel about a girl, abandoned by her mother and being raised by her grandmother, who is mercilessly teased at school. It's a poignant coming-of-age story with a very local Hawaii setting.

Shark Dialogues, by Kiana Davenport
This is one of my favorite Hawaii novels. This multigenerational saga details the history of Hawaii through the experiences of one family. It begins in the 19th century with the dramatic meeting of a young Yankee sailor and a beautiful Tahitian princess. Their descendants, who live in contemporary Hawaii, are four mixed race cousins named Vanya, Ming, Rachel, and Jess who have been brought up by Pono, a kahuna, or seer, who has never talked about her mysterious past to her four granddaughters.

Song of Exile, by Kiana Davenport.
This is one of my favorite Hawaiian authors. Kiana Davenport grew up in Honolulu and writes about many of the areas you may recognize as you read this book. Continuing to explore the history of her native Hawaii, the author of Shark Dialogues traces the saga of a Hawaiian jazz musician and a Korean-Hawaiian beauty who narrowly survive the punishments of World War II. I actually read this one first and then found the her other novels! Alice Witkowski

Review: Not too chi chi and they make a superb risotto and gravlax open-faced sandwich dish! As with all Hawaii Regional Cuisine, focus is on fresh, local ingredients and produce. Portions are just right and very tasty. The only thing I would not recommend so far is the onion soup. For a decent french onion soup, go next door in Ward Centre to Ryan's Grill. Lunch prices are very reasonable at Tango too! Casual sit down and open for lunch and dinner. Dinner reservations a requirement because the place is so small.

Review: Excellent food. Incorporates locally grown organic produce. "Green" restaurant. See a Honolulu Advertiser review for more information. Open for lunch and dinner. Reservations recommended for dinner. You can also make reservations via Open Table. For dinner, he homemade gnocchi with sage butter is awesome (limited to 15 dishes per evening). Recommended dishes are also anything fish, the New York steak and roasted chicken (both heartier options for famished diners). I would not recommend the duck though as it is greasy and heavy. If you are going for drinks and pupus (appetizers) the bruschetta with pickled cabbage and fresh anchovies is wonderful! It really is my new favorite appetizer to eat there. The Beet Salad is not very memorable in my opinion so skip that and order something else instead.

Review: Really good Northern Italian food - and I've eaten Italian in Chicago and Sydney - so its good. Risotto, pizza's. I've been for lunch (much more reasonable) and for dinner. Very nicely decorated and great service.

Review: Breakfast, lunch, dinner, late night menu, cocktails. Open twenty four hours a day. Across the street from the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Popular local hangout for the late night crowd.This is a great place for breakfast if you need to get to the convention center early. Juice and cereal with toast is $5.85; Hawaiian style breakfast (corned beef hash, two eggs, butter grilled bananas) is $6.95; French toast $5.25; coffee $1.85. Many other breakfast options. After breakfast, it's a 12 minute moderately paced walk to the front door of the convention center -- perhaps shorter since it's not hot at that hour.

Review: Finely shaved, like snow, type of shaved ice. You can add your choice of condiments such as azuki beans, condensed milk, mochi balls (sweet sticky rice balls), etc, but I prefer mine with only vanilla ice cream on the very bottom. Shave ice is a very popular treat in Hawaii because of the hot, humid climate and diverse asian-southeast asian ethnic groups where shave ice treats are very popular as dessert items. Like malasadas, you can't leave the islands without digging into Hawaii style shave ice at least once.

Napolean's Bakery is usually attached for those who love pastries, pies, cakes and other desserts.They make a mean dobash (chocolate pudding sponge cake) cake!

Lantern Floating Ceremony in Hawaii

May 25, 2009 (Memorial Day) -- 6:30 - 7:30 p.m. -- Ala Moana Beach Park (Magic Island)
Following the Buddhist tradition ofToro-Nagashi ("lantern offerings on the water"), this annual event honors the deceased. Prayers or messages to loved ones who have departed are transposed onto recycled wooden, paper lanterns which are light in the evening and set to sail from the beach of Magic Island. In 2007, an estimated 37,000 people gathered to participate or witness the event which is free to the public. Prayers are completed ahead of time but for conference attendees who plan on staying on Oahu during the Memorial Day weekend, this is a cultural event worth seeing.

May 23,24, 2009 -- Waikiki Artfest at Kapiolani Park

Our events feature approximately 75-100 fine artists and handcraft artisans who display their own art for sale including jewelry of all types, clothing, wood products, stained glass, ceramics, soaps and candles, bags, quilts, lauhala products. The events are scheduled from 9am - 4pm both Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free, and we have live entertainment as well as great food available for our guests to enjoy.
