Review: Open 24-7 (hence it's name), serving comfort style dishes both local and mainland American. Highly recommended is the white cheddar mac and cheese and fried chicken with waffle and gravy. Lobster pot pie is not though so pass that one. Pancakes are huge but so worth it-- delicious!!! There's a bar too but cannot comment much about it since I have only gone for breakfast/lunch.

Review: Okonomiyaki is a Japanese pancake that they put all kinds of things in. Put a sauce on and serve hot. The things to put in are chosen by you - things like chicken, steak, calamari, veggies, bean sprouts, etc. It's cooked like at Benihana right in front of you so you get to eat it hot. You can also get fried noodles and daily specials for lunch. Its fairly reasonable for lunch and you can ask for a regular table if you don't want all that steam in your face.

Review: Hawaiian foods for the locals. This is what we've come to understand as "Hawaiian" food. Poi, lau lau, kalua pig(roasted pork), poke(raw fish). Everything is tasty and everything is probably like nothing you've eaten before. If you're adventurous (culinary wise). Poi comes fresh or day old. Locals usually order day old cause it has more flavor. If you want to play it safe order the rice, kalua pig, beef stew. See the Hawaiian page for more descriptions of the dishes.

Review: If you during lunch, there is both table as well asdim sumservice where carts containing small dishes or "little tokens" are pushed to your table . If ordering from the dim sum cart, you simply tell the server what you want and how much. Your check is marked as you order until you are completely full and can't order anymore! Dinner is also served but dim sum is not offered during those hours so be sure to stop by at lunch time!

Review: Japanese bentos (boxed meals) are available here as well as a large variety of Japanese snacks, sweets, and a buffet in you wish to dine in. It gets crowded and the buffet is expensive. Grab a bento, which is a better value, or a snack and eat it in the mall somewhere as there are lots of benches and open seating areas around the mall. The juice bar in Shirokiya on the mauka (mountain) side in the food area is healthy and delicious! If you love avocado, try the avocado smoothie (not so healthy since it contains condensed milk) or my favorite, the papaya smoothie which is made of fresh papaya, citrus and non-fat yogurt! hmm... i want one NOW!

Review: Not too chi chi and they make a superb risotto dish! As with all Hawaii Regional Cuisine, focus is on fresh, local ingredients and produce. Portions are just right and very tasty. The only thing I would not recommend so far is the Onion soup. For a decent french onion soup, go next door in Ward Centre to Ryan's Grill. Lunch prices are very reasonable at Tango too! Casual sit down and open for lunch and dinner. Dinner reservations a requirement because the place is so small.

You can add your choice of condiments such as azuki beans, condensed milk, mochi balls (sweet sticky rice balls), etc, but I prefer mine with only vanilla ice cream on the very bottom. Shave ice is a very popular treat in Hawaii because of the hot, humid climate and diverse asian-southeast asian ethnic groups where shave ice treats are very popular as dessert items. Like malasadas, you can't leave the islands without digging into Hawaii style shave ice at least once.

Botanical Gardens & Arboretums

Foster Botannical Gardens. An oasis in urban Oahu, the gardens were established in 1853 and have a large collection of rare and beautiful plants from the tropical regions of the world. Information on the gardens is also available at the City and County web site.

Hoomaluhia Botanical Garden A beautiful setting on the windward side with spectacular views of the Koolau mountains. Hoomaluhia is very large (400 acres), with collections of tropical plants from around the Pacific, a lake, and numerous picnic areas. A great place to take your lunch or an afternoon snack and just relax. I especially like the walk around the lake. There are a lot of mosquitoes in the area so take some bug repellant. Information on the gardens is also available at the City and County web site.

Koko Crater Botanical Garden Known for their dryland collection, this is about a 2 mile circuit and is hot and sunny. No mosquitoes here but wear a hat and sunblock. Information on the gardens is also available at the City and County web site.

Lyon Arboretum A small arboretum that includes sections with native Hawaiian plants, palms from around the world, an ethnobotanical section, a spice garden, and more. Again, lots of mosquitoes. Visit another link for Lyon with pictures.

Review: Local Vietnamese chain restaurant serving fabulous array of cold cut style sandwiches (on a french roll of croissant), summer rolls, and even Vietnamese plate lunches like lemon grass chicken. Their spring roll bun (spring rolls sitting on a bed of rice noodles, some veggie and the typical Vietnamese sauce of sugar, vinegar, fish sauce, chiles) hits the spot, especially on a hot, humid day. Don't forget dessert: tapioca coconut rice pudding with fruits such as purple sweet potato etc.

A little oasis in the midst of bustling downtown Honolulu. Quaint open-air setting with outdoor seating. Can be busy on Friday afternoon/evening. Weekly wine events get filled up so make reservations early if you are interested.

Review: Family style Italian restaurant. You can order small versions too. Restaurant chain, sit down. I've never had anything that I didn't like here. The food is great, service is great. A good place for a large group since portions are large and meant for sharing (family style). They have a lunch menu too for small eaters.

The shrimp salad is killer-- light and tangy and delicious! Open in the evenings as well.

Celebration of Story and Song

The Mayor of Honolulu described the event as:

"This unique event will showcase the proud literary and musical traditions of our islands in a way that is
fun, accessible and memorable for people of all ages, backgrounds, and tastes. Hawaii’s publishers strive to
introduce Hawaii’s books and music to the world and to introduce Hawaii to new worlds of books and
music. They honor our host culture, including the oral and written histories of the Hawaiian people, and
highlight lifelong literacy for all of Hawaii’s people."

The 2008 festival featured Michael Ondaatje, Linda Sue Park, and James Rumford.

World Fireknife Dance Competition and Samoa Festival May 1- 30, 2009

On the grounds of the Polynesian Cultural Center.
Attracting competitors from Hawaii, American Samoa, Samoa, the US mainland and other locations in the
Pacific-Rim, this event sees participants compete in dance-offs to be crowned champion in the World
Fireknife Dance Competition. Winners progress to the next round and the final is held on the last day of the
festival. The competition is part of the Samoa Festival, which includes a high school competition of
traditional customs such as speech making, basket weaving, coconut husking and fire-making - as well as
singing and dancing.

Hawaii Romance Festival May 1-14, 2009

Concerts and events that celebrated romance and highlighted Hawaii as one of most romantic destinations
in the world. The 2008 Festival featured Gladys Knight, Smokey Robinson, Aaron Neville, Sergio Mendez,
Brian Stokes Mitchell, American Idol's Kimberly Locke, and Martin Nievera. Events included a renewal of
vows on the grounds of the Iolani Palace, music under the stars at the Waikiki Shell, presentation at the
Hawaii Theatre of World's Most Romantic Songs Ever Written, R&B concert at the Blaisdell Arena, and a
Mother's Day evening at the historic Royal Hawaiian Hotel to raise funds for breast cancer.

Ala Moana Beach Park
Ala Moana Beach Park is located across the street from Ala Moana Shopping Center. For those wanting to get their feet wet, county lifeguards are usually on duty. For those who don't, the park is great for picnics and has a jogging/walking path.

North Shore
Visit the North Shore. The north shore has high surf in the winter, flat surf in the summer, and moderate to no surf in spring and fall. A drive or bus ride to the North Shore is a pleasant way to spend the day. Endangered Hawaiian Monk Seals can occasionally be found sunning on the beaches. Waimea Bay has beautiful white sand beach and crystal clear water. Three Tables and Shark's Cove beaches are great for snorkeling when the surf is low. There are life guards, restrooms, and showers at some of the north shore beaches but not all.

Financing MLA'09 in Hawaii

The following are some suggestions discussed at MLA in Chicago--we thought that they might be helpful to you in planning for the MLA'09 Meeting:

Remind your administrators of the good ideas, information, contacts both other colleagues and vendor contacts that have helped you and your organization.

Sessions will focus on how medical libraries can meet the complex challenges and opportunities impacting medical libraries today and into the future.
Discover innovative and cost-saving ways to deliver library services.
Session topics will include change management, digitization, integrating new technologies -- such as web 2.0 tools -- into library services, health information literacy, evidence-based medicine, consumer health information, library space planning, and much more!
Provides an excellent opportunity for Medical Librarians to learn new approaches to facilitate improved access to library products and services.

Hotel rate at the Hilton Hawaiian Village, our conference hotel, at $199.00 plus taxes is lower than what we all paid in Chicago. (Total tax to be applied to your hotel bill would be 11.962% (sales tax is 4.712% plus Transcient Accomodations Tax 7.25 %) That rate should be available to you 3 days before and 3 days post-conference according to availability. Book early.

Airfares:

Save your coffee money-- what you'd spend on coffee daily and you'll have a good chunk of change toward covering your airfare.

Use your miles--consider using your "miles" to get yourself to the west coast and pay the rest of the way or try to use your miles for the entire trip..book early.

Non-continental travel not allowed? Consider asking your administrator to fund you as they would for the meeting in Chicago or in Washington DC.

Airfares
The following websites have been recommended for checking for the lowest fares...also the Hawaii Convention Center representative indicated that sometimes the middle of the week produces better fare rates.

You can also set up "fare alerts" on travel sites such as Travelocity, Orbitz, and Kayak. With "fare alerts," you get an email when flights to your destination go on sale or good deals are to be had..

Yapta has been recommended for tracking flights you have already booked. Users have been able to get travel voucher credits from their carriers when rates go down.

Baggage

Pack light - May is sunny and warm (low 70's to high 80's). Must haves - a pair of sandals, a light sweater (air conditioning), sun block and an umbrella. Leave your fancy things at home. Hawaii is a casual place. There are few places or restaurants that require you to dress up. Neat casual clothing is even appropriate at the 5 star restaurants.
Cotton/cool clothing is preferable for a tropical climate. Bring comfortable walking shoes.
Need resort wear? All major department stores can be found in Honolulu and clothing prices are comparable to those in any large U.S. city.
Shopping for bargains can be fun in Honolulu! Discount outlets such as Ross's and Nordstrom's Rack are in the Ward Shopping Village as is a local Crazy Shirts Outlet where bargains can be found.

Eating in Honolulu can be very reasonable...whether your tastes are exotic or normal sandwich/salad fare.

Sales tax is a low 4.712% on all purchases.

Water out of the tap is so good--there is no need to buy bottled water.

Many free attractions for all to enjoy--including the beaches, the sunsets, Friday night fireworks display, scenic walking areas, etc.
