1967 Milestone: 1 million tourists arrived in Hawaii.

1972 Hawaii first state to ratify the Equal Rights Amendment.

1992 State hit by most destructive hurricane Iniki - killing 4, injuring 1,000and causing $1.6 billion in damages.

caduceus1994 HMLG renamde to "Hawaii Pacific Chapter of the Medical Library Association, Inc." (HPCMLA).

1997 Controversy surrounded the book buying contract for the entire State of Hawaii library system. The state canceled the contract and was subsequently sued by Baker & Taylor. Public librarians claimed the Baker & Taylor was doing a poor job in book choosing and were charging too much for certain titles. Eventually the Head Librarian resigned over the flap. More than 30 years after conception H-3 finally opened at a price tag of $1.3 billion.


2001 9/11 Terrorists attack the Pentagon and destroy the World Trade Center. Impact on Hawaii tourism as hotels and other businesses must lay-off workers. First confirmed case of dengue fever. Honolulu police and fire officials kept busy on dozen of calls after the anthrax mailings on the mainland.

2003 In the first transit strike since 1971 there was a month-long bus strike. The strike started over saving jobs and avoiding service cuts and ended focusing on wages and pensions. 1336 bus transit workers went on strike and riders ended paying higher rates for bus passes and fares to pay for the pay package. Tourism was hit negatively by the Iraq war as well as the SARS scare. Japanese arrivals dropped by 40% in the month of May.

2006 A magnitude 6.7 earthquake shoke the island chain. On Oahu nearly the entire island lost power for the entire day (Kahala didn't get power back until 5 p.m.) The damage on the Big Island topped $100 million. 43 days of continuous rain in March which caused Kahala Mall to flood (with water flooding into theater as Ice Age: the Meltdown played).The Kaloko Dam on Kauai broke killing 10 and destroying home and property. Finally 55 Hawaii-based soldiers died in Iraq and Afghanistan.

2007 University of Hawaii football team made it to the Sugar Bowl. They eventually lost but it was a great ride none the less. 41 soldiers did not return with the rest of the 7,000 members of the 25th Division from their 15-month deployment to Iraq. Don Ho one of the most popular Hawaiian entertainers died at the age of 76. There was a large, well-attended celebration of his life in Waikiki.
