Arizona MemorialIolani Palace

Arizona Memorial at Pearl Harbor

The Arizona Memorial is the resting place for the USS Arizona's crewman who died on December 7,1941. The United States flag flies from a pole attached to the mast of the sunken ship. Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor led to President Roosevelt's request for declaration of war on Japan on December 8, 1941. Tour the memorial, museum, and exhibits. Located about 45 minutes from Waikiki by car or by bus (a little longer).

Battleship Missouri Memorial at Pearl Harbor

The Mighty Mo' was the site for the signing of the Instrument of Surrender on September 2, 1945 by Japan, bringing World War II to an end. Located at Pearl Harbor. Self tour or guided tour available.

Bishop Museum

Founded in 1889 by Charles Reed Bishop, the museum is a collection of millions of artifacts, documents, and photographs about Hawaii and other Pacific cultures. It is recognized worldwide for its collection, research, educational programs, and consulting services. Located in Honolulu, about 20 minutes from Waikiki.

Contemporary Museum

The museum is devoted to contemporary art. Located on Tantalus mountain, the museum is nestled among nature in the Spalding House, originally the 1925 residence built by Mrs. Charles Montague Cooke. Located in Honolulu, it is short drive by car to the museum. While there, enjoy the gift shop, cafe, and the spectacular view of the city.

Doris Duke Foundation for Islamic Art (Shangri La)

Doris Duke's 5-acre estate in the Diamond Head area is Shangri La. It was built in 1937 and is known for its impressive collection of Islamic art. Guided tours of the estate are available. For a preview, take the virtual tour

Hawaii State Art Museum

Free, and located right next to the State Capitol, HiSAM (250 S. Hotel St.): 586-0900 features a nice variety of artists who live(d) in Hawaii. The collection is fantastic and is located in a superb old building. It does close early though (except on First Fridays). It also has a nice place for lunch on the ground floor.

Hawaii's Plantation Village

This is an outdoor museum showcasing the lifestyles of the immigrant plantation workers in the 1900's. There are 32 replica structures and restored buildings depicting the multi-ethnic village . Artifacts were donated by Hawaii's families. The museum is located in Waipahu, about 1 hour by car or bus (a little longer).

Honolulu Academy of Arts

Founded in 1927, the museum is a registered historic place accredited by the American Association of Museums. Collections focus on European and American paintings, the graphic arts, and the arts of Asia. While there, dine at the Pavillion Cafe. The museum is located in Honolulu. Take a bus or about a 20 minute drive from Waikiki.

Honolulu Zoo

The zoo is located in Waikiki. Take a bus or walk (a long one) to the other end of Waikiki. Enjoy visiting the 1,000 mammals, reptiles, and birds.

Iolani Palace

Visit the Palace and learn about Hawaii's history. Guided tours available. The Palace was the official residence of King Kalakaua and his sister, Queen Liliuokalani. The Palace was built in 1882 and is a National Historic Landmark. Located in downtown Honolulu - take the bus. While here, walk around and see the other historic buildings and landmarks of Hawaii's history.

Japanese Cultural Center of Hawaii

Visit the Gallery and experience the multi-generational history of Japanese in Hawaii. Located in Honolulu, about a 15 minute drive from Waikiki.

Mission Houses

Walk into 19th century Hawaii. There are three restored houses, including the artifacts during the missionary period 1820-1863. Guided tour available. Located in downtown Honolulu, within walking distance of Iolani Palace

Queen Emma Summer Palace

The Palace was the summer retreat of Queen Emma, the wife of King Kamehameha IV. The museum is located in Nuuanu Valley.

Waikiki Aquarium

The exhibits focus on marine and reef life of Hawaii and the Pacific. Located in Waikiki, within walking distance of the Honolulu Zoo.
